Chewbacca Base Paint

⚙️ Step 1 — Priming and Warm Undertone Layer

🧱 1. Prime

  • Paint: Vallejo Surface Primer Black (70.602)
  • Technique: Airbrush or brush evenly across the entire base.
    • Ensure full coverage, especially in recesses.
    • Let dry completely — this gives a matte, toothy surface for metallics.

🔩 2. Metallic Foundation

  • Paint: Model Air Gunmetal (71.072)
  • Technique:
    • Apply a thin, even coat over the primer.
    • Focus on raised areas and broad surfaces.
    • Leave some black visible in deep recesses for natural shading.

🔥 3. Warm Undertone Glaze

  • Paint: Model Color Copper (70.999)
  • Mix: Thin 1 part paint : 3 parts Airbrush Thinner (71.161) or Glaze Medium (70.596).
  • Technique:
    • Lightly glaze mid‑sections and flat panels.
    • Avoid edges and deep recesses — keep warmth subtle.
    • Use a soft brush or airbrush for smooth transitions.
    • The copper should tint the gunmetal, not cover it.

🌫️ 4. Optional Modulation

  • Paint: Model Air Steel (71.065)
  • Technique:
    • Drybrush lightly on upper ridges and edges.
    • This restores metallic reflection lost under the copper glaze.

🎨 Result

  • The black primer gives depth.
  • Gunmetal provides the cold metallic base.
  • Copper glaze adds warmth and realism.
  • Lettering remains muted, ready for later highlighting.

🖤 Step 2 — Dark Wash and Shadow Definition

🧴 1. Prepare the Wash

  • Paint: Vallejo Model Wash Black (76.518)
  • Mix: Thin 1 part wash : 1 part distilled water.
  • This keeps the pigment flow smooth and prevents blotching.

🖌️ 2. Apply the Wash

  • Technique:
    • Use a fine brush or soft flat brush.
    • Flood the wash into recesses, around the Rebel emblem, and under the lettering.
    • Let capillary action pull pigment into grooves.
    • Avoid pooling on flat surfaces — wick excess with a clean brush.

3. Drying and Cleanup

  • Allow 20–30 minutes to dry.
  • Once dry, gently buff raised areas with a lint‑free cloth or dry brush to restore metallic sheen.
  • This leaves deep shadows and crisp definition around sculpted details.

⚙️ 4. Optional Enhancement

  • For extra contrast, mix Black Wash (76.518) with a drop of Dark Sea Blue (70.898) — it adds a cold tone that complements the copper warmth from Step 1.

🎨 Result

  • Recesses darken dramatically, emphasizing the sculpted swirls and emblem.
  • Raised metallic areas regain subtle shine.
  • The base now has realistic depth and shadow separation, ready for Step 3 (Gold Lettering).

Step 3 — Gold Lettering and Edge Highlights

🪙 1. Lettering Restoration

  • Paint: Vallejo Model Color Gold (70.996)
  • Technique:
    • Use a fine detail brush.
    • Carefully pick out the raised “STAR WARS” and “CHEWBACCA” letters.
    • Keep strokes light so the gold catches only the top edges.
    • Two thin coats give better coverage than one heavy pass.

⚙️ 2. Edge Highlighting

  • Paint: Model Air Steel (71.065)
  • Technique:
    • Drybrush gently along the rim, emblem edges, and horn tips.
    • This restores metallic reflection and contrast lost under the wash.

🌫️ 3. Optional Tone Balance

  • If the gold looks too bright, glaze lightly with Smoke (70.939) thinned 1:3 — it adds a subtle patina and ties the tones together.

🎨 Result

  • The lettering gleams against the dark wash.
  • Edges catch light naturally.
  • The base now looks aged yet refined — perfect for display.
